The Leibniz Association is one of the largest research organisations in Germany. In a total of 97 independent institutes, scientists search for answers to the social, economic and ecological questions of our time. The organisation’s own medium, ‘leibniz’, reports on how they go about this and what findings they come up with. We gave the printed and digital magazine its contemporary and lively design – and not only won prizes with it.

The challenge

‘leibniz’ is anything but a classic research medium: the ambitious magazine utilises all journalistic forms of presentation and possibilities of magazine design to make the working methods and findings of its individual projects and institutes understandable to readers. In addition to exciting reports and interviews, there are generous photo spreads, portraits and other attractive formats. The design of the magazine was naturally intended to be as unusual as the editorial team’s narrative approach. But what could it look like?

Approach

Clear, generous, flexible and surprising – this is the layout we created for the Leibniz Association based on the corporate design we had previously developed. The exciting stories from the world of science are given sufficient space and are presented with unusual images and amusing illustrations. Condensed moments alternate with generous image sections – creating an exciting rhythm that invites you to browse and discover the content. When selecting the images, we favoured a bold look outside the box – towards art, pop culture and similar areas.

We developed our own recognisable style for the illustrations. Clear graphics make scientific findings tangible. We worked closely with the ‘leibniz’ editorial team and an external photo editor to produce a total of twelve print editions.

Following the launch of the print edition, we developed the digital presence of ‘leibniz’, which has since complemented it: two of the three editions are now published exclusively digitally. This expands the possibilities for communicating content and information in a clear and easy-to-understand way: Infographics, for example, are animated and interactive. In addition, individual articles can be found more easily and quickly via the archive and search function.

Why we love the project

We received the Econ Award and the Best of Content Marketing Award (BCM) for ‘leibniz’. However, the best effect was achieved with a recent employee recruitment project: our designer Leonie came across us via the printed ‘leibniz’ magazine – we are happy about that every day.
